The report estimates how much natural gas sits in underground storage in the Lower 48 states, by region, and how much that changed from the week before.
Each figure is shown next to the same week a year earlier and the five-year average, which is how the market judges whether storage is tight or comfortable.
Injection and withdrawal seasons
Storage usually fills from April through October, when demand is lower, and empties from November through March, when heating demand peaks. These are called the injection and withdrawal seasons.
A smaller than expected injection, or a bigger than expected withdrawal, suggests a tighter market. Natural gas futures often move within seconds of the 10:30 a.m. ET release.
Holiday weeks
The EIA moves the report in some holiday weeks, sometimes earlier and sometimes later. Thanksgiving week usually moves it to Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. ET.
