What the report covers

The Weekly Petroleum Status Report measures the US oil system for the previous week. It covers commercial crude oil inventories, gasoline and distillate (diesel and heating oil) inventories, refinery runs and utilization, crude production, and imports and exports.

It also estimates demand, which the EIA calls product supplied: how much gasoline, distillate, and other fuels left primary storage.

Why oil prices move on Wednesday mornings

Inventories show whether supply is running ahead of demand or behind it. A larger than expected crude draw points to a tighter market, and a surprise build points to a looser one.

Traders compare the EIA figures with analyst surveys and with the American Petroleum Institute (API) estimate released the evening before. The gap between expectation and the official number is what moves prices at 10:30 a.m. ET.

How holiday weeks change the schedule

When a federal holiday falls early in the week, the EIA moves the report back a day, usually to Thursday at 12:00 p.m. ET. In some years the EIA also sets special dates around Christmas and New Year's, which it adds to its schedule closer to the time.

Holiday weeks move the release; the table below lists every one we know of through 2027.
