What the WASDE report is

WASDE is the USDA's monthly balance sheet for world and US crops. It estimates supply, use, and ending stocks for corn, soybeans, wheat, rice, cotton, sugar, and livestock products.

It comes out at the same time as the USDA Crop Production report, which updates US yield and production estimates during the growing season.

Why grain markets watch it

Ending stocks, the amount left over at the end of the marketing year, are the number traders watch most. Lower than expected stocks point to a tighter market, and higher stocks to a looser one.

Because analysts publish their estimates beforehand, prices react to the gap between the survey and the USDA figures right after 12:00 p.m. ET.

Questions

What time is the WASDE report released?

12:00 p.m. ET on each scheduled date.

Why are WASDE dates irregular?

The USDA sets each date around crop survey timing and holidays, so it is not tied to a fixed weekday. It publishes the schedule about a year ahead.
